Motorola Sets Off 4G Technology Race

October 4th, 2007

With mobile telephony 3G technology barely out of the gates, Motorola has signaled a race to corner the 4G market with its WiMax mobile broadband technology.

In parallel developments and strategic market positioning, Motorola is upgrading its 3G handsets and infrastructure, an area in which it has been overtaken by rivals in the mobile infrastructure and handset wars between North American, European and Asian mobile technology providers.

With 3G technology still in its infancy, Motorola leads manufacturers in cornering and patenting 4G technology in the next generation of mobile communication devices. Even its Asian competitors are not to be left behind with Toshiba, Matsushita, Samsung, NEC, Mitsubishi and Sony in a frantic attempt to capture as much 4G intellectual property as they can, in anticipation of the transition from 3G to 4G technology.

Although patent ownership does not guarantee success in cornering the 4G market, cross-licensing between rival handset manufacturers can set the trend for a more integrated development mobile technology. This scenario would of course be beneficial to us end-users all over the world.
